Statement from the Global Committee for Commemorating the Fifteenth Anniversary of the June Fourth Massacre

Calling for Co-Signature in Support of Dr. Jiang Yanyong’s Petition Letter to Chinese Leaders on the Name Restoration for the June Fourth Pro-democracy Movement

In the eve of the 15th anniversary of the ’89 patriotic democracy movement and the June Fourth massacre which shocked the whole world, Dr. Jiang Yanyong, the national hero when fighting against SARS in 2003 and one who worked as a medical doctor at the time when the June Fourth massacre occurred, wrote a letter to the Chinese National People’s Congress, Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party, as well as the State Council of Chinese government. In the letter, he requested the name restoration for the June Fourth patriotic student movement in 1989. We would like to express our strongest support and highest respect for the righteous action taken by Dr. Jiang. In the mean time, as inspired by Dr. Jiang’s moral courage, hereby we appeal to the people all over the world to co-sign their names in support of the righteous demand made by Dr. Jiang. (64memo祖國萬歲-1989)

The name restoration for the June Fourth movement itself is something of significant meanings, both historically and realistically. It’s an unavoidable starting point to bring comfort to the Chinese nation to heal her historical wound, as well as to create a glorious future. Comparing to “rehabilitate” or “revaluate”, we think that “name restoration” is the best expression. We believe that a people’s movement of asking the name restoration for the June Fourth movement will unfold overwhelmingly, and innumerable figures following Dr. Jiang’s steps will emerge in the land of China. (64memo.com´89)

The ’89 patriotic democracy movement had stimulated in great deal the consciousness and moral courage among Chinese people. Chinese all over the world had envisioned a hopeful future of China. However, a national tragedy had occurred. Since then, the institutional corruption becomes more severe and there have been more social injustices and disparities in Chinese society. The moral state of the Chinese nation has been deteriorated greatly. Today, those who were most responsible for giving the order of opening fire during the June Fourth massacre have either passed away or been out of power. It’s the time to resolve the issue of the June Fourth completely. Nowadays, the social frictions have accumulated more profoundly, catastrophic situation like volcanic eruption is becoming more and more possible. This is neither what the authority is willing to see, nor the good fortune for the Chinese nation. To avoid further deterioration of the situation, the name restoration for the June Fourth movement has become an urgent task. Only in doing so, could the discontent and indignation accumulated among the people be relieved, and the stagnant political reform be restarted. (64檔案 / 89)

Therefore, we hereby jointly launch this global petition campaign in support of Dr. Jiang and his righteous and bravest action. Each signature counts. Let’s work together on this global campaign to push forward this movement of restoring the name of the June Fourth.
